Ranch Signs

Here we have a cattle ranch entry sign located in California, The design was provided by the customer. This is a free standing unit suspended between two cedar posts. The sign is situated on a side road leading into the ranch off the main highway. Strata recommended the use of HDU because of the proximity to the Pacific Ocean. However the customer insisted on the use of sandblasted cedar, in this case, we applied a clear coat of Urethane to protect the sign against the damp, salt air.

The large steer skull was carved as a separate unit in three pieces then applied to the sign face. Carving was done in four layers for extra dimensionality. The use of a semi-transparent dark brown stain in the background evened out the light and dark wood grain that is often characteristic in California Red Cedar.
